Old-Fashioned Homemade Eggnog

This is an old-fashioned recipe with uncooked eggs and raw milk and cream
Prep Time 10 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 12 farm fresh eggs separated
  • 1 cup organic sugar
  • 1/2 gallon raw milk
  • 1 qt raw cream
  • 2 tsp homemade vanilla
  • 3/4 tsp organic nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon or cinnamon stick (optional)

Method

  1. Separate 12 eggs keeping the yolks and set aside the egg whites
  2. Mix 1 cup sugar with the egg yolks with a handmixer until mixed well
  3. While mixing, slowly add in milk and cream
  4. Add 2 tsp of vanilla and 1/2 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp of cinnamon(optional)and mix throughout
  5. In your bowl of 12 eggs whites mix until you have high peaks.
  6. Take half of the egg white meringue and fold into eggnog mixture. You can add all 12 egg whites but I prefer only half. You can keep the other half for meringue for another treat.
  7. Chill
  8. Prior to serving, add a dash of nutmeg add a cinnamon stick (optional)

Notes

To cook your eggnog...
  • Heat the milk and add about 1/4 of it into the egg/sugar mix slowly to temper the eggs.
  • Then, add the eggnog mixture back into the saucepan with the rest of the milk and cook carefully for a few minutes. Whisking continuously so you don't boil or cook the eggs. Add cream when the mixture has cooled a bit.
We use our farm-fresh eggs, raw milk, and cream, and homemade vanilla, but store-bought ingredients can be substituted.
Enjoy!
*The original recipe is from The Little House Cookbook. Changes are cinnamon, fewer egg whites, and vanilla
