How to Make the BEST, Most Flavorful Einkorn Tortillas You’ll Ever Eat

Does anything go with a fajita or taco meat better than a tortilla? Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy a taco salad, but there’s something so inviting for a warm tortilla with all the meat, veggies, and toppings inside. I previously made tortillas with regular flour and they were good, but since switching to einkorn flour they are superb! Try these flavorful einkorn tortillas today and you’ll never buy store-bought again.

What is special about einkorn flour?

  • easier to digest
  • not hybridized
  • flavorful

Since switching to einkorn we have enjoyed our baked goods so much better.

Is all-purpose einkorn flour healthy?

Since einkorn is an ancient wheat and better for digestion. It’s not hybridized so our bodies can handle it better. When making my own homemade tortillas in the past, I used regular all-purpose white flour.

Realizing we couldn’t eat flour, we switched to corn….but GMO caused many problems so our “tacos” became a little boring as the kids would say.

So switching this einkorn flour tortillas recipe has been a win-win for the kids!

Can celiacs eat einkorn wheat?

It really should be avoided. However, if you are sensitive to gluten, einkorn flour may be a perfect alternative for you like my family.

Where do you buy einkorn flour?

Substitute other flours

If you haven’t tried einkorn you could substitute this recipe and use wheat or white flour. Adjusting your ingredients may be a little different as you may need to increase the liquid.

Making these homemade einkorn tortillas has brought back the fun to our weekly taco night. Now the kids are happy again eating their tacos!

Homemade einkorn flour tortillas
Servings 14 tortillas 7 large

Ingredients

  • 3 1/3 cup all-purpose einkorn flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt ( I use a little less)
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • Mix the dry ingredients flour, salt, baking powder. I like to use a fork to incorporate.
  • Add in softened butter and mix
  • Add hot water.I have a tea kettle on my stove and I heat it up while mixing in the other ingredients
  • Mix and knead. Set aside for about a half-hour. Einkorn does better if left aside for awhile, but most of the time we can't wait!
  • Preheat iron skillet on medium heat
  • Add a little flour to the rolling surface. Roll out desired size or about a golf ball size. I like my hand roller (each end has a roller) from pampered chef. Place in a hot iron skillet and cook for about 45 seconds until bubbles and flip

Notes

The flavor of these einkorn tortillas is the BEST! Enjoy! Make a double batch because everyone will ask for more!
*I have tried olive oil instead of butter and it wasn’t as tasty. Lard would probably work well and be flavorful
*I have also used coconut oil. They cooked faster on the skillet but butter has a better flavor.
